Worldwide Standard (ISO Standard 18916)

PAT is a world wide standard for archival quality in photographic enclosures. It is used to test the components of enclosures such as adhesives, inks, paints, labels and tapes. The test involves incubating materials in temperature- and humidity- controlled chambers to simulate aging and takes from four to six week. Acid Free test Acid Free testing is part of PAT.

Acid is only one of the problems associated with enclosures. The emission of oxidants is another, and in fact, it is probably more of a threat to the enclosed images than acid. Enclosure components such as glues, inks, and chemical additives also may cause image degration.
