In 1890s, cities across the United States were plagued by a rash of fatal fires caused by faulty electrical equipment and wiring. To prevent the outbreak UL had been set up in 1894 to test electrical equipment or a part of it, such as wire, cable or tags or combination of any parts of the appliance etc. against a specially made up environment that simulate the actual working condition of that electrical appliance.
